Water heaters

Water heater repair and replacement in Gallatin, TN

When the hot water quits, Jennifer answers the phone and Michael comes out. He is the licensed plumber who owns the company, and he does the work himself. He repairs and replaces gas and electric tank water heaters in homes and businesses across Gallatin and Middle Tennessee.

Signs your water heater needs a look

Water heaters rarely quit all at once. Most give a few warnings first. These are the signs we tell people to watch for, and the ones people most often describe when they call:

  • Not enough hot water, or it runs out sooner than it used to
  • Water that takes too long to heat back up
  • Rusty or discolored hot water
  • Strange noises from the tank
  • Water around the base, or leaks at the fittings and valves
  • Pilot light or burner trouble on a gas unit
  • A heater more than 10 years old

Repair or replace? Michael tells you straight

Not every water heater needs to be replaced. Sometimes a rebuild gets it running right again and saves you the cost of a new one. In August 2026 we rebuilt a water heater in Portland instead of replacing it. We will always recommend the most cost-effective fix for your home.

Sometimes the problem is not the heater at all. On one call, a heater was throwing an error code and had stopped working. Michael traced it to an exhaust plug that had been left in place when the unit was installed. He cleared the vent pipe, pulled the plug, and the heater ran again.

Other times the right answer is a new heater. In April 2026 we replaced one in Gallatin that was 18 years old. The family had been living with uneven hot water and rising energy bills. If it's a plumbing problem, we'll fix it. If it's not, we'll point you in the right direction.

What a replacement involves

A typical gas replacement on one of our jobs goes like this: Michael removes the old heater, sets the new one, connects it to the existing water and gas lines, installs a new temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve, checks the venting for safety, tests the whole system and hauls the old heater away. Many installs also get an expansion tank and a drain pan. We offer a 1-year parts and labor warranty on qualifying work. Manufacturer warranties may vary, and exclusions may apply.

We put water heaters wherever the house has them: garages, closets, under sink cabinets, and tight crawl spaces. In Lafayette, a lightning strike ruined an electric heater inside a mobile home with no easy way in. We opened the side of the home to swap the unit, then closed it back up neatly.

We have installed A.O. Smith and State heaters, and we also install heaters that customers buy themselves.

High water pressure can wear out a water heater

A dripping T&P relief valve is sometimes a pressure problem, not a heater problem. In Portland in March 2026, a home had 100 PSI at the tap, and the high pressure had the water heater's relief valve leaking. The valve had already been replaced once, but the pressure itself had never been fixed, so the leak would keep coming back.

That same month in Portland, Michael installed a new pressure reducing valve (PRV) on a home at 100 PSI and brought it down to 80 PSI. In Gallatin in May 2026 we replaced both a PRV and a T&P valve to protect another home's water heater. If your relief valve drips, ask us to check the pressure too.

If your water heater is leaking right now

Don't ignore it. A small leak can turn into costly water damage fast. Call or text (615) 670-4049 and tell Jennifer what you see. When one customer's dishwasher went out late at night, Jennifer got Michael on the phone and he talked her through shutting the water off. We were there the next day.

Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM. We will also take emergency calls outside those hours when the situation warrants it.

Call or text and Jennifer will get you on the schedule.

Honest answers & reliable service

Common questions

Why am I running out of hot water?

Usually age and wear. Over time, sediment builds up in the tank and you get lukewarm water and less of it. A failing element, burner or valve can do it too. Michael checks the heater and tells you whether it can be repaired or should be replaced.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

It depends on the heater's age and what failed. Some heaters can be rebuilt for much less than a new one, and some can't. Michael looks at your unit and recommends the most cost-effective option for your home.

How long does a water heater typically last?

Most tank water heaters last about 8 to 12 years, and the risk of leaks goes up after 10. We have replaced one that was 18 years old. Age alone doesn't decide it. Michael looks at the heater itself.

What are the signs my water heater is failing?

Not enough hot water, water that takes too long to heat, rusty or discolored water, strange noises from the tank, leaks around the unit or its valves, and pilot or burner trouble on gas units.

Why is my water heater leaking?

A leak at the tank itself usually means the heater is at the end of its life. A drip from the T&P relief valve can come from water pressure that is too high, which a pressure reducing valve fixes. Leaks at the lines and fittings can often be repaired. Michael finds which one it is.

How often should I flush my water heater?

Our VIP membership includes one flush a year, for a tank heater up to 50 gallons or for a tankless heater. For tankless heaters, we recommend a flush once a year.

Can you replace my water heater the same day?

We offer same-day service when scheduling permits, and it also depends on the heater your home needs. Call or text (615) 670-4049 and Jennifer will tell you what's open.

Does the VIP membership include water heater maintenance?

Yes. Members get one water heater flush a year for a tank up to 50 gallons, or one tankless water heater flush.

We noticed an unexpected increase in our water bill and suspected we had a leak somewhere. I called Michael Jr. Plumbing, and they were able to come out in less than 24 hours. Michael quickly determined that the leak was inside the house, found the source, and had it repaired in no time. I really appreciated the prompt, professional, and friendly service. It's a relief to have the problem fixed so quickly, and I'll definitely be calling Michael Jr. Plumbing again for any future plumbing needs. Highly recommend!

What our customers say

4.9 stars from 160+ Google reviews.

The were here in the time frame allotted, very reasonably priced off what I was expecting, fast, friendly and seemed genuinely interested in doing a good repair vs a 'cheap' repair that would just need to be addressed again later. Will definitely use them again for plumbing needs and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others in need. 10 of 10, without reservation.
